Green Star has an immediate opening for a Plant Nursery Manager of Horticulture. The ideal candidate will be able to think and operate independently but relate and communicate well with others, and be passionate about working in nature to improve the ecosystem.
The manager’s responsibilities include:
Propagate plants from seed and divisions in greenhouse and field settings
Oversee quality and presentation of plants in the field and greenhouse. Communicate needs for weeding, watering, fertilizing, pruning and pest management to the team.
Train and supervise employees in plant collection, propagation, and harvesting.
Harvest seed and plants, both wild-collected and nursery-grown, as part of a team.
Oversee seed cleaning and storage.
Assist in preparing plants for shipping.
Research protocols for growing local wetland species.
Conduct plant trials to compare growing techniques (soil mixes, propagation methods, etc.) to develop the best practices.
Communicate schedules, materials, and work flow with staff and management.
Maintain record keeping for inventory, plant trials, and all aspects of nursery operation.
Assist in planting wetland sites.
Assist in hiring and training employees.
Education and experience:
The ideal candidate has a Bachelor degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, or similar. On a case by case basis, a minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience in nursery management may take the place of the degree.
2 years minimum greenhouse and field production experience is essential.
Familiarity with Texas native plants is essential.
Experience and familiarity with wetland plants is a bonus. On the job training will be provided.
Proficiency in Spanish is a bonus.
High organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail is essential.
Must be able to work outdoors including the extremes of summer and winter.
Ability to personally lift and drag loads up to 50 pounds, and repetitive lifting of lighter loads, is required.
Must have tolerance of wet and muddy conditions.
Ability to walk two miles is a must.
Ability to commute to the farm in Alvin or to job sites is a must.
Saturday or evening hours may occasionally be required.
Full time (40 hours), $20.00 hourly wages, with potential future transition to salary.
4 hours vacation time and 4 hours sick leave accrued per biweekly pay period.
Valid State driver’s license is required.
Horticulture Certification or other agricultural industry certifications are desirable.

Green Star Wetland Plant Farm LLC began operations in the Houston area in 2019 to provide native wetland plants for wetland restoration, mitigation, treatment wetlands, and landscape projects. In the first year, clients and projects included the Houston Zoo, Houston Parks Board, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Memorial Park Conservancy, and the National Wildlife Federation, as well as public and private projects in Fort Worth, Austin, Pearland, and Athens, TX. Our company is rooted in 20 years’ experience in wetland construction and landscape design. Our mission: We are dedicated to providing excellent wetland plant stock to regenerate the beauty and function of wetlands for Texas and the Gulf Coast.
